Overview

The goal of the template initiative is for all integral organizations at the Yale School of Medicine to use this design, helping to reflect that they are members of the YSM community, as well as providing online visitors with reliable guideposts as they navigate our complex institution.

An added bonus of the template is that departments and other organizations at YSM save money and time by using a design and navigational system that is already well developed. In addition, YSM provides free services in conjunction with the templates, such as consulting time to help organizations develop their site structure, assistance with choosing home page banner images, and free licenses to the Web editing software, Contribute.

To provide overall school consistency, the templates work in concert with the redesigned YSM home and central pages at medicine.yale.edu, launched in Fall 2007.

Working with the template

There are two ways to work with the template:

• ITS-WS will create the entire website, working with the YSM entity to determine navigational structure and content.
• ITS will collaborate with an organization’s Web manager to create the website architecture and directory structure. ITS will create all major elements including the graphic banner, navigational structure and empty pages based on the navigation structure. The Web manager can then add the content and complete the website using Contribute.

Since the purpose of the template system is to have all sites resemble one another in look and feel and be similarly structured, you may not alter the fundamentals of the design and navigation once you have agreed to use the template for your website. If you have concerns that something in the template does not work for your needs, please contact the YSM Office of Institutional Planning & Communications (Lena Parker or Justin Fansler) so that we can resolve the issue.
