Surveillance for Tuberculosis Transmission
To protect employees and patients and to assess the current infection control measures, a systematic employee tuberculin screening program is essential.
Active surveillance for tuberculosis among patients and YNHH healthcare workers, and for tuberculin skin test conversions should be coordinated through the Department of Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control and Occupational Health Services.
Data on the occurrence of tuberculosis among patients and tuberculin skin test conversions among healthcare workers should be collected and analyzed by staff in Hospital Epidemiology, and Occupational Health Services so as to estimate the risk of tuberculosis transmission at YNHH and to evaluate the efficacy of infection control and screening practices. Among hospital personnel, the risk of acquiring new infection should be estimated for each area and the frequency of retesting determined per the findings of surveillance activity. The data of such surveillance should be reported to the Infection Control Safety Committees at periodic intervals.
