Respiratory Protection
Upon entering the room of an individual on Airborne Precautions for suspected or confirmed pulmonary TB, all staff must wear appropriate respiratory protection.

Current OSHA Standards as developed by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health) require that the respirator minimally filter 95% of 0.3 um sized particles.

The two respirators which meet these requirements are:

N-95
HEPA

Healthcare workers using a N-95 or HEPA respirator must be fit-tested before using either respirator. Additionally, if a healthcare worker had been previously fit-tested for a HEPA respirator, the worker must be fit-tested again before using a N-95 respirator. YNHH staff can arrange for fit-testing through the Yale New Haven Hospital Occupational Health Service, 8-2462.
