Patient Placement
Place the patient in a private room that has:
monitored negative air pressure in relation to the
surrounding areas (i.e. a negative pressure room)
6 to 12 air exchanges per hour
appropriate discharge of air to the outdoors or
monitored high-efficiency filtration (HEPA) of room air before
recirculation to other areas in the hospital
All of the negative pressure rooms at YNHH meet the above
criteria for airborne precautions. The engineering department
performs regularly scheduled maintenance for all of the negative
pressure isolation rooms. If there is a concern regarding the
integrity of the room for use in Airborne Precautions, the YNHH Facilities Department should be contacted immediately.
Such a room should not be used for patient requiring airborne
precautions until it is reviewed by the YNHH Facilities Group.
While a patient with suspected/confirmed TB is in a negative pressure isolation room on Airborne Precautions, the door must be kept closed at all times except when entering/exiting the room. If an anteroom is present, then both doors to the patient's room and the hallway must be kept closed. An open door will eliminate the negative pressure gradient by equilibrating the pressure gradient between the patient's room and the hallway. As such the room will not protect patients and staff from TB exposure.
Place a pink Airborne sign on the door and on the front of the patient's medical record.
