Introduction, pg2
The causes of this increased incidence of TB cases are complex, but four contributing factors have been identified to date:
  1. The synergy between TB and HIV co-infection. HIV infected individuals are at a significantly higher risk of active infection following exposure than non-HIV infected individuals.
  2. Increased immigration to the United States from countries where TB is highly prevalent.
  3. Transmission of TB in congregate settings (i.e. healthcare facilities, prisons, and homeless shelters).
  4. Decreased public health resources to identify, track, and treat cases of active TB.
