Glutaraldehyde

Glutaraldehyde, (e.g.,Metricide, Cidex, VHA Plus) is an effective chemical used for high level disinfection. However, there is a growing concern over the potential adverse effects of exposure to glutaraldehyde liquid and vapors.

One should avoid glutaraldehyde, if it is not necessary to use it for high-level disinfection purposes. If high level disinfection is necessary, the equipment may be sent to a central processing location such as Central Sterile Supply. There are also other liquid disinfectants available for the purposes of high level disinfection that may be utilized as well.

However, if it is absolutely necessary to use glutaraldehyde for high level disinfect equipment in a clinical area, the following must be carried out:

Notification

The Department of Hospital Epidemiology (8-4634) must be notified of al clinical areas using glutaraldehyde.

Safety Considerations

Please refer to the YNHH Safety Manual for details on the safe use of glutaraldehyde.
