Regulated Medical Waste (RMW)

Federal and Connecticut State Regulations require the separation of certain medical waste materials from routine trash. Detailed policies
and procedures regarding the disposal of regulated medical waste
can be found in the Yale-New Haven Hospital Environmental
Services Department Policy Manual and Nursing Organization and
Practice Manual (NOPM), Vol. I. Regulated Medical Waste. Further information on the procedures for separating,
collecting, storing, transferring, and disposing of solid wastes,
including general, medical, and chemotherapy wastes, can be obtained
by contacting the Environmental Services Department at 8-6688.
Trash receptacles for regulated and non-regulated
waste materials are located throughout the hospital.
RMW receptacles always contain a "biohazard" label
and red bag lining the receptacle. RMW is not placed in trash chutes or
compacted at a trash disposal site. When the RMW receptacle is full, the container is sealed and removed by Environmental Services/Environmental Associates Personnel using RMW carts to the central disposal area. Containers are replaced with an empty container with a red bag liner.
