Terminal Cleaning of Patient Rooms

Terminal room cleaning includes all daily routine procedures and:
Disinfection of the bed frame, mattress, pillow, and all other room furniture with an EPA-approved disinfectant.
Disposal of all opened and/or contaminated non-reusable items.
Removal of suction containers from the room for reprocessing or disposal.
Return of reusable equipment that requires disinfection and/or re-sterilization to CSS for reprocessing.
All reusable, clinical equipment that may be contaminated will be decontaminated prior to servicing or repair according to Departments of Nursing, Engineering, Environmental Services, and Material Management Services policies. If complete decontamination prior to service or repair is not possible, the portions of the equipment that are still contaminated will be labeled with a biohazard sign specifically identifying the portions that remain contaminated.
Soap in dispensers and toilet paper rolls do not have to be discarded routinely during the terminal cleaning of patient rooms.
The cleaning of Airborne/Droplet Precaution rooms is identical to the cleaning of all other patient rooms. In addition to the required barrier protection attire, a N-95/HEPA respirator must be worn at all times for the daily cleaning of Airborne Precautions rooms, for patients with suspected/confirmed pulmonary TB. A standard surgical mask is sufficient for cleaning a room with a patient on Droplet Precautions.
