Cleaning of Patient Rooms
Environmental surfaces, such as walls, floors, and counter tops, have not been associated with the transmission of infectious diseases to patients or to health care workers. Routine housekeeping procedures using EPA-approved disinfectants according to the manufacturer's directions should be used for cleaning environmental surfaces in patient care units and in hospital areas that provide support services for patients. At Yale New Haven Hospital, the standard cleaning solutions for housekeeping purposes are disinfectant solutions approved by the Infection Control Committee and diluted according to manufacturer's directions.

NOTE: These cleaning solutions are highly caustic and must be properly diluted.

Under the Standard Precautions system, cleaning procedures and schedules are identical for all patient rooms:

Gloves should always be worn for routine cleaning procedures. Other barrier protection should be worn if needed.
Horizontal surfaces, such as counter tops, over-the-bed tables, and bedside stands, are damp cleaned daily with an EPA-approved disinfectant solution.
Floors are damp mopped daily.
Waste receptacles are emptied daily and on an "as-needed" basis. The liners of the receptacles are replaced whenever waste is removed.
Bathrooms are cleaned daily, and special attention should be given to the cleaning of the commode, sink, faucet handles, and door knobs.
Soap dispensers should be checked daily for function and replenished with liquid soap as needed.
Cleaning of vertical surfaces, such as walls and curtains, is needed periodically or when soiling is visible.
Cleaning cloths and mop heads are reprocessed daily by the Environmental Services Department.
