Airborne Precautions
Discontinuation
Airborne Precautions for a patient with suspected or confirmed TB may be discontinued provided the following criteria have been met:

Airborne Precautions may be terminated by any of the following individuals responsible for the patient's care, provided that the criteria for discontinuation Airborne Precautions have been met:

Attending or Resident Physician
Hospital Epidemiologist or his/her designated representative

Hospital Epidemiology (QISS) is available to assist in the assessment of individual patients prior to the discontinuation of Airborne Precautions. In the event that a difference of opinion arises concerning the need for Airborne Precautions, the final decision regarding the discontinuation of control measures will be made by the Hospital Epidemiologist or his/her designated representative.

In cases involving special clinical and/or epidemiological circumstances, the Department of Epidemiology and Infection Control may request Airborne Precautions to be extended for an individual patient. A consultation note will be written by an infection control staff member in the "History and Progress" section of the patient's medical record describing the circumstances and rationale for maintaining the patient on Airborne Precautions.
