Caduceus is a publication of Yale Medical Group Art Place, an award-winning program created, sponsored, and managed by Yale Medical Group (YMG), the multi-specialty group practice of the Yale School of Medicine’s clinical faculty.

We sincerely thank all of the artists and poets who have generously contributed to make Yale Medical Group Art Place a resounding success. Special Thanks to Poet Sherri Bedingfield for her gift of financial support.

Our condolences to the family and many friends of poet Richard Tietjen who passed away this year. His poems have appeared in past issues of Caduceus.

Forward

It is exciting and an honor to be part of the creative and therapeutic environment of Art Place and the Yale Medical Group. These poems are intended to be available for the enjoyment of patients, staff and visitors of the Yale Medical Group in the waiting areas of the Yale Physicians Building as well as to showcase the talents and artistry of the authors to our community.

Caduceus is not entirely of, or about, the medical experience, but about life and common humanity, feelings and insights we have and share with each other. I have endeavored to make this collection accessible to all readers as well as relevant and useful. I hope they provide a unique and enlightening perspective to the joys and sorrows of our world.

Caduceus 7 includes poems by Robert Hass, Pulitzer Prize-winner, environmentalist, teacher and former U.S. Poet Laureate, nationally recognized poets Brenda Hillman, Vivian Shipley, Susan Kinsolving, and others. There are some impressive works by fellows of the Cave Canem Foundation, Yale Medical Group physicians as well as from several Healthcare professionals. Connecticut poets are well represented and include some poems by new young poets for whom this is their first publication. Simone Wolff is a recent graduate of Guilford High School which makes a noteworthy effort to highlight poetry as part of its curriculum.

There are featured new and returning members of the Connecticut Poetry Society and the Guilford and other poetry groups. Noted and rhyming author of children’s books MW Penn has recently had a poem on the cover of Highlights for Children.

I recommend to you the special feature by Micki Balaban and Susan Feldman concerning The Village of POWER program at the Cornel Scott Hill Health Center. The Village of POWER is a specialized program for women who struggle with addiction, mental illness social disconnections and poverty. The authors describe and include examples of how poetry and the rewards of writing contribute and enrich the lives and recovery of the women in the program. The poems by these women are very moving. The Village of POWER is a worthy program in search of a publisher and support.

Please take the time to look at the biographical notes of the contributors and see what an outstanding accomplished, diverse and inspiring group are featured in this volume. There is humor and fun, philosophy and love, family, miracles, fantasy and history in these pages. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
