Yale Cardiothoracic Surgery is pleased Sabet Hashim, MD, has returned from private practice to rejoin Yale’s full time faculty as Director of Cardiac Valve Surgery.

During his twenty-five year affiliation with Yale School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital, Dr. Hashim has been involved in the initiation of a number of clinical cardiac programs including cardiac transplantation, mitral valve repair and surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation. Dr. Hashim has developed techniques in minimally invasive valve surgery and is the leading expert in mitral valve repair in the State of Connecticut and one of the few in the country to repair ischemic mitral valves. He has extensive experience with bilateral mammary bypass grafting as well as complex cardiac valve operations.

Dr. Hashim's areas of clinical expertise also include:

  • Surgery for atrial fibrillation, the Left Maze Procedure using radio frequency ablation
  • Complex valve operations and combined procedures
  • Tricuspid valve repair
  • Re-operative coronary and valve surgery
  • Bilateral mammary bypass grafting
  • Mitral repair for ischemic mitral regurgitation

Dr. Hashim has developed or modified several surgical techniques that minimize or hide surgical incisions to achieve more favorable aesthetic results. For example, Dr. Hashim has used small submammary incisions for mitral valve repair (Click here for more). He also consistently uses a 3-inch lateral incision for the closure of Atrial Septal Defects (ASD).

Working with the newest technologies and procedures, Dr. Hashim's goal is to improve the quality of life of his patients in a competent and compassionate manner.

Brief Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Hashim has been practicing medicine since 1975. He completed his internship and residency at St. Luke's Hospital Medical Center in New York City, where he also served as Chief Resident of Surgery from 1978 to 1979. Following his training in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), he remained in New Haven to join the Yale faculty.

From 1981 to 1986, Dr. Hashim served as Co-Director of Cardiac Transplantation at YNHH, was a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut.
