Health Professionals Christian Fellowship

Preamble

We are comprised of students, faculty and other individuals in the health professions at Yale University united in our common desire to know and serve Jesus Christ. By God’s amazing grace through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are being freed from self-centeredness toward self-sacrifice; this transformation, in turn, makes us yearn for the coming of God’s new day of complete healing and compels us to work toward the renewal of His creation. Furthermore, we recognize in the present culture of health care the need for an affirmation that nothing God made is god and all God made is good, that humans are finite and free embodied souls who bear the image of God, that there are limits to human freedom, and that final victory over suffering is not within human powers. We cherish, in Jesus Christ, the hope for such wonders as life, family, justice, and human flourishing.

Statement of Purpose

Our purpose is to glorify God in our personal and professional lives by encouraging, educating, and equipping one another to live out our faith in Jesus Christ in the health professions and to provide a forum for spiritual searching.

Core Values

In particular, we are committed to:
  • Growing in intimacy with a holy, loving, and personal God by meeting Him in prayer, delighting in the Holy Scriptures, and submitting to His authority in all areas of our lives.
  • Developing an inviting and winsome community by caring and praying for one another in our personal and professional lives, gently confronting one another of our sins, pointing one another towards Christ our hope, and encouraging one another to participate in the wider Body of Christ, including local churches.
  • Inviting others to enter into a trusting relationship with Christ by gentle and fearless witnessing, in word and in deed, to the redeeming work of Christ – in our immediate community and in places where a witness has been lacking, both domestically and internationally.
  • Pursuing an attitude and practice of service by affirming that we have been given much in ability, opportunity, and education, not to live for ourselves but for our Lord and others – and by sacrificially serving our colleagues, patients, and those in need, whether or not they believe as we do.
  • Promoting a culture of health care patterned after God’s righteousness, compassion, and justice by learning to work with excellence, humility, integrity, and prayer in our professions, understanding suffering in light of Christ’s cross and health in light of his resurrection, engaging our profession and culture in loving public discourse, and practicing health care, individually and as a society, in light of Christian truth.

Statement of Faith

Together with the Christian Church through the ages, we believe in:
  • The only true God, the almighty Creator of all things, who exists eternally in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and is full of love and glory
  • The unique divine inspiration, entire trustworthiness, and authority of the Bible
  • The value and dignity of all people: created in God’s image to live in love and holiness, but alienated from God and each other because of our sin and guilt, and justly subject to God’s wrath
  • Jesus Christ, fully human and fully divine, who lived a perfect life, who assumed the judgment due sinners by dying in our place, who was bodily raised from the dead, and who ascended as Savior and Lord
  • Justification by God’s grace to all who repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation
  • The indwelling presence and transforming power of the Holy Spirit, who gives to all believers a new life and a new calling to obedient service
  • The unity of all believers in Jesus Christ, manifest in worshipping and witnessing churches making disciples throughout the world
  • The victorious reign and future return of Jesus Christ, who will judge all people with justice and mercy, giving over the unrepentant to eternal condemnation but receiving the redeemed into eternal life

We are a registered, student-run, interdenominational group at Yale University.
