Performance-based Standards for SPECT and PET Scans of Nonhuman
Primates
The following criteria has been established, based on performance-based
standards, to ensure the health and well-being of nonhuman primates used in research
projects that involve multiple SPECT and/or PET scans.
- Veterinary Clinical Services(VCS) will maintain a record, by individual animal, in the
primate book. This record will contain the scan related health history, dates of previous
scans, and the number of days (post-scan) it took before the animal returned to
"normal" condition based on but not limited to the following criteria:
- food consumption
- fecal output
- overall appearance
- behavior
- The research staff will file an Intent to Use Anesthesia form with the VCS
office 24 hours in advance of the scan date to allow VCS time to assess the animals
history. This form will be faxed(737-1943) to the VCS office. In addition, the research
staff will send notification via e-mail to the VCS office (VCSstaff@mail.med.yale.edu) and to the
Manager of Primate Health Services, VCS (susan.morgenstern@yale.edu).
- Each animal must be given a rest period of two weeks between scans to allow for full
recovery.
- If aberrant behavior or conditions are detected, an assessment will be made and
discussion will occur between the primate health service, the research staffs and a
veterinarian to determine the course of action to be taken with the animal (e.g., longer
rest period, removal of the animal from the scanning protocol, etc.).
