Procurement of Rodents

Approved Sources    Non-Approved Sources

Rodents are available from many sources, commercial and non-commercial. The Yale Animal Resources Center classifies these sources as "approved" or "non-approved". The procedure for ordering from each of these is different.

Approved Sources

Approved sources are usually commercial operations that routinely monitor the health status of their colonies. Summaries of their testing results are available through mailings and on-line. Based on these results YARC maintains a List of Approved Vendors. Requests to purchase animals from approved vendors may be submitted through the On-Line Animal Order Form, by telephone (785-2502) or in person (SHM BG66). Additional Information.

Non-Approved Sources

Non-approved sources include other universities, reseach institutions and biotech companies. Although most of them do have health monitoring programs we must ensure that no unwanted infectious organisms are introduced int the Yale rodent colonies. To obtain animals from a non-approved source you must submit an On-Line Request to Introduce Rodents Form for each shipment and receive approval from the QA veteriniarian. Upon arrival these animals will be held in the quarantine facility and screened prior to release into the animal rooms. Additional Information
