Rabbit Conditioning and Enrichment

Arriving Rabbits:

  • Day 0 (day of arrival): No pellets, one small handful of Hay
  • Day 1: 25% of food ration, one small handful of hay
  • Day 2: 50% of food ration, one small handful of hay
  • Day 3: 75% of food ration, one small handful of hay
  • Day 4:100% of food ration, one small handful of hay

Daily Maintenance Feeding Protocol for Rabbits:

Age of Rabbit Weight of Rabbit Feed Amount (weight)
5-20 weeks 2-8 lbs. 150 grams (5.3 ounces) daily
20 weeks and older 8-12 lbs. 125 grams (4.45.3 ounces) daily

Environmental Enrichment:

  • Feed each rabbit a small handful of hay twice weekly, i.e. two evenly spaced days such as Monday and Thursday
  • Rabbits may have 1/4 slice of apple or a 2-3 inch slice of carrot once weekly alternate to hay feeding days. Rabbits may be hand fed 2-3 Cheerios or Bite-sized Shredded Wheat weekly as a food treat. This interaction with the animal technician will provide the opportunity for close examination of each rabbit and will confirm normal posturing and movement.
  • Toys will be rotated throughout all the rabbit's cages.
  • Colored star stickers placed onto the cage card are used to identity rabbits which enjoy attention and being stroked and petted.

Health Monitoring:

  • All food intake and stool production should be observed daily. Rabbits with significant decrease in food intake, decrease in stool production, or change in stool consistency should be reported to Veterinary Clinical Services (VCS).
  • VCS will advise YARC when it may be necessary to monitor body weight by weighing and adjusting food consumption.
