Administration of Trimethoprim Sulfa in Mice

  1. For treatment of Pneumocystis infection
    1. Mice receive TMS in their drinking water for 3 consecutive days of the week
      1. Concentration of drug is 40mg trimethoprim and 200mg sulfamethoxazole
      2. Give 0.125 ml of suspension for every 4ml of drinking water, this works out to be 15.6ml of TMS in a 500ml H20 bottle
    2. The water bottle should be shaken daily while drug is added to resuspend any that settles out
    3. The remaining 4 days of the week give regular drinking water
    4. Continue this same schedule each week
  2. For treatment of other infections
    1. Sulfatrim may be administered for 10-14 days continuously
    2. Add the same amount per 500ml H20 as above
    3. Invert bottle daily to resuspend
    4. Change bottle and add fresh medication every 3-4 days
