Housing Options

When placing an animal order you will be asked for your requirements for housing. This will be dependent on the strain of animal and type of experimental work being performed. If you are not sure which option is best for your animals please consult with the Manager of Rodent Service. There are the options most commonly requested:

  • BASIC - for immuno-competent mice/rats where clean but non-sterile supplies and non-sterile cage changing techniques are performed
  • FULL SERVICE - Sterile service usually reserved for immuno-deficient mice/rats. Autoclaved caging and food are provided. Cages are changed in a clean air cabinet/change station using sterile technique.
  • SINGLE HOUSING - Animals that must be housed alone because of experimental conditions or health reasons may qualify for a special per diem rate. Requests must be submitted in writing on a "YARC Request To Singly House Rodents" form available from the YARC office on facility supervisors. The criteria used to determine justification for this housing rate are:
    1. Cage will require only bi-weekly changing rather than weekly
    2. Male rodents that require separation due to aggressive behavior
    3. Rodents that need to be separated due to health status
    4. Specific research needs

A complete list of current per diem rates is available here.
