- mating (in consultation with investigator)
- weaning
- record keeping
- eutanaisia of retired breeders and unwanted animals (as determined by DNA analysis)
- breeding colonies are housed in designated animal rooms without investigator access
- the investigator receives weekly reports which include:
- breeding performance
- number of litters born
- number of animals weaned
- number and age of stock animals available for experiments
- sampling for DNA analysis (as determined by the investigator)
- automatic sampling of animals at pre-determined age
- collection of blood, tail/ear biopsies or rectal/buccal swabs depending on
investigator's preference
- marking of animals for identification
- the animals are maintained on the Breeding Service YACUC protocol
- animals for experiments are relocated to the investigators animal room
- breeding problems (e.g. related to genotype) are analyzed and addressed
- reduced cost for housing of animals
- smaller more efficient breeding colonies
- timely genotyping and elimination of non-desired genotypes
- timely rejuvination of breeding stock
- up-to-date information on number of animals available for experimentation
- professional maintainance of breeding colonies
- on time weaning reduces number of lost litters
- proper identification of individual animals
- record keeping
- less hassle with the YACUC
- no need to list breeding colony (i.e. technical details) on your own protocol
- no overcrowded cages
- better utilization of your lab personnel
- have your post-docs do research not breed mice
- peace of mind
- knowing that you valuable breeding stocks are well taken care of
All aspects of this service will be charged on an actual time basis. Tech-time is
currently 42$ per hour. Breeding colonies differ widely due to genetic differences
(breeding systems, reproductive performance, etc.) and due to research requirements. For a
price quote please contact the Manager of Rodent Service.
We will evaluate your colony and give you an estimate.
