Background

Moving animals between rooms is a prime way of distributing an infection throughout the campus. However, often this cannot be avoided. The QA program evaluates all relocations, comparing the the health status of the original and the proposed room and requires testing, treatment or quarantine if necessary.

In addition all relocations are recorded. In case of an outbreak this will help to track potential spread to other rooms and help contain the infection. For this reason it is imperative that requests are submitted for all relocations. This will allow us to maintain a complete record of all animal moves within and between the facilities.

Procedure

The procedure to relocate rodents within Yale consists of the following steps:

Relocation Request Form1. Request Form

A Request to Relocate Rodents must be submitted. The request form is found on-line and must be submitted electronically. Please fill out the form completely, all information is necessary for completion of the relocation. You will receive a confirmation by e-mail to acknowledge the receipt of the request. This will also contain instructions on how to mark the cages.

2. Review of Request

The request is reviewed and the health status of the original room is compared with that of the proposed room. In some cases (i.e. moving animals from a basic service room to a full service room) additional testing will be requested. YARC personnel will collect and submit the requested samples.

3. Approval

If there are no restrictions the request is approved immediately. If testing is required the QA vet will review the test results and make a final assessment. If necessary the animals will be moved to quarantine for rederivation. The investigator and the supervisors of both facilities are informed by e-mail.

4. Transfer

On the relocation request the investigator can choose either to have the animals moved by YARC (fee-for-service) or move the animals themselves. Once an relocation request has been approved YARC will move the animals (if so instructed). Otherwise the investigator should make contact the facilities supervisor hand have the animals brought from the room. Investigators should not enter both rooms unless they are in the same facility and in the proper room order.
