Yale University permits the use of vertebrate animals in animal related research, testing, or training, but the purchase and use of animals is subject to approval and oversight under rules defined by the Yale Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Director, Yale Animal Resources Center (YARC). These rules require that any orders for vertebrate animals be placed and received through YARC. All requisitions require a valid protocol number from the IACUC. Procedures for ordering animals from commercial vendors are:

PROCEDURE:

  • Obtain IACUC approval to use vertebrate animals
  • Obtain a valid PTAEO number(s) from your department
    • YARC validates IACUC protocol number and PTAEO
  • Select a YARC-approved vendor
  • Submit your order to YARC in one of the following ways:
    • Submit an Animal Requisition on-line (preferred)
    • Fax an Animal Requisition to 785-3099
    • Call your order in to 785-2526
  • All orders must provide:

To cancel or change an order call 785-4108 or send an email message to: animal.order@yale.edu

  • The requisition is assigned a release number by YARC and the order is processed through the vendor
  • All animals are received by YARC, and the Principal Investigators are responsible for all costs associated with the purchase, husbandry, and health care of these animals starting on the first day of arrival

RATES:

YARC charges the Principal Investigators a per diem rate for the care of the animals in the facilities. These rates are based on the species of animal and mode of housing.
