Educational Initiatives

EducInitiativesWomen’s Health Research at Yale in collaboration with community members and agencies has established a dedicated and growing public education Initiative for Community Wellness.

Our outreach includes:

  • Broadcast Media

    Video: From Vision to Innovation: Women’s Health Research at Yale – aired on public access stations throughout Connecticut.  Community leaders and Yale researchers join director, Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure to explain why women’s health research is important.

    Podcasts: We now offer audio broadcasts which can be downloaded from our web site. Yale is using Apple's iTunes to distribute the University's podcast, all free of charge. You can listen to these files on your computer, iPod or MP3 player. Visit Yale University on iTunes for more information.
    Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure –Yale Tomorrow: "Sex and Science: What Do We Really Know About Women's Health?"
    Dr. Karl Insogna – Bone Health: "Osteoporosis and Diet"

    TV/Radio: Dr. Mazure provides interviews on contemporary women’s health issues through national and international broadcasts. She has appeared on ABC’s “Prime Time Live,” the BBC, WTIC – [radio Diane Smith…], WTNH – ABC Channel 8, and The Faith Middleton Show on National Public Radio.

  • Interactive Presentations

    Community Workshops: Our collaborations with community agencies provide targeted learning workshops.  For example, our two-part workshop in cardiovascular health and diabetes provided health information to clinic associates at The Fair Haven Community Health Center

    Yale Tables: Our Council organizes small, personal gatherings for individuals interested in learning more about the mission and ongoing research activities of Women’s Health Research at Yale.  These events are known as Yale Tables and have been held in New Haven, throughout Connecticut, and in Washington DC, New York, and Boston. 

    Scientific Workshops: Our monthly scientific workshops are geared toward educating scientists, physicians, young investigators and medical students.  These workshops feature ongoing work at Yale as well as invited scientists from other institutions.   • Conferences

    Medical Education Conferences: Our half-day medical education conferences offer professional development for health care practitioners.  Fall 2007 Conference: “Treating Impulse Control Disorders and Addiction: New Developments and Practical Office-based Approaches.”

    Biennial Conferences: Our biennial conferences draw several hundred participants from across Connecticut and neighboring states.  These conferences provide new data on women’s health and feature prominent individuals as “Women of Vision” who have made significant contributions to women’s health.  Our most recent conference, with over 500 in attendance, honored Roslyn Milstein Meyer, Ph.D., and Gloria Steinem as our 2005 “Women of Vision.”

  • Print Media
  • Our quarterly newsletter, Innovations in Women's Health, provides focused research findings and health news. It is available in print and electronic formats and is sent to over 3,500 individuals.

    Our informational pamphlets provide health news in context.  A few selected topics include:

    • Quitting Smoking: Is it more difficult for women than for men?
    • Women and Heart Disease – What We Don’t Know Can Hurt Us
    • Making Sense of Research Reports in the Media
    • Understanding How Nutrition Affects Bone Health

    Commentary in newspapers and magazines by Dr. Mazure have been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, US News & World Report, Real Simple, Family Circle, Connecticut Magazine, Today’s Health & Wellness, New Haven Register, Hartford Courant, Connecticut Post, and local shoreline papers. 

    Books and chapter contributions generated through Women’s Health Research at Yale include Understanding Depression in Women: Applying Empirical Research to Practice and Policy, Globalization, Women, and Health in the 21st Century, and Does Stress Cause Psychiatric Illness?.
