Specialized Training in Women’s Reproductive Behavioral Health

The Yale Program for Women’s Reproductive Behavioral Health (WRBH) provides specialized training for psychiatrists in their third postgraduate year or above of training.  The training program, directed by C. Neill Epperson, M.D., requires that trainees provide at least 10 clinical hours each week to WRBH.  Trainees participate in evaluating patients referred to the Program for consultation regarding the treatment of psychiatric disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period, menstrual cycle impact on ongoing psychiatric disorders, and the role of hormones in mood and cognition during the menopause.  In addition to providing clinical consultations, all trainees serve as primary clinician for several women enrolled in the Program.  Women who receive on-going care in the Program are primarily pregnant or recently postpartum.

Individuals with an interest in clinical research may participate in ongoing investigations or develop their own protocol pertaining to women’s behavioral health.  In addition, trainees attend weekly didactics and a journal club in order to stay current with recent findings and to hone their ability to review scientific literature.  For those individuals with a serious commitment to research and an academic career, WRBH is associated with a National Institute of Mental Health T32 training grant (PI: Robert Malison).  This T32 grant provides 2 years of salary and research training for up to 2 individuals each year.
