Carolyn M. Mazure, Ph.D.
Director, Women's Health Research at Yale

Dr. Carolyn Mazure is a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at Yale School of Medicine. She created and directs Yale's interdisciplinary women’s health research program - Women's Health Research at Yale.

Dr. Mazure came to Yale for her fellowship training after completing graduate school and three years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she worked in studies on the genetics of psychiatric disorders. Immediately following her postgraduate training, she was invited to join the Yale faculty. She became an active clinician and Director of Psychiatry’s Adult Inpatient Acute-Treatment Program at Yale-New Haven Hospital, as well as an active researcher.

Dr. Mazure’s research focuses on the interplay of stress, depression, and addictive disorders. She has a particular interest in gender-specific predictors of illness onset and treatment outcome, and issues of importance to women's health. Her books include Does Stress Cause Psychiatric Illness? and Understanding Depression in Women: Applying Empirical Research to Practice and Policy? She has been a featured expert on ABC’s “Prime Time Live” and the BBC documentary the Science of Stress.

Currently, Dr. Mazure oversees an extensive research portfolio and is the Scientific Director for Yale’s NIH-funded Specialized Center of Research on gender-specific factors associated with stress and cocaine addiction, the Principal Investigator for the Sex-Specific Factors Core of the recently renewed NIH-funded Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center, and a Principal Investigator within Yale’s new NIH-funded Consortium on Stress, Self-Control and Addiction.

Dr. Mazure's actively working to insure that research findings inform public policy and that there is a national commitment to health research. She has provided testimony to the United States Congress regarding the importance of research on women’s health, served as a fellow for the Government Reform Committee in the office of Congressman Henry Waxman, and developed an NIH-funded partnership with the George Washington University to teach researchers how to communicate with legislators and the general public about science. She has been the invited speaker on issues of pressing need in women’s health at the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women for the State of Connecticut and at the United States Congressional Women’s Caucus.

Among other honors, Dr. Mazure was on the planning committee for the First White House Conference on Mental Health, and chaired the American Psychological Association's Summit on Women and Depression. She has been an invited speaker at diverse venues ranging from NASA to the Smithsonian Institution to the International Psychogeriatric Association in Stockholm, Sweden. Her awards include a U.S. Public Health Service Fellowship, the Stephen Fleck Clinician and Teacher Award from Yale, the Elizabeth Blackwell Award from the National Organization for Women, the Marion Spencer Fay Award from the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership and the American Psychological Association Distinguished Leadership Award from the Committee on Women in Psychology. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, and is on the editorial boards of The Journal of Women's Health, and Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology.

As Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Dr. Mazure has responsibility for developing and interpreting faculty policies, and overseeing the academic appointments and promotions process at Yale Medical School.
