Leading a complex institution like the Yale School of Medicine is familiar territory to Dean David Kessler, who has long experience in the public and private sectors. Committed to creating opportunities for students and faculty, he marshals resources and people to make things happen. When a group of students saw a role for themselves in the Kosovo conflict, they approached the dean with an idea for helping with the health care needs of the refugee population. He offered his assistance, and the students were amazed to find themselves working in a Macedonian refugee camp six weeks later. Advancing the mission of the school by providing researchers, clinicians, students, and faculty the tools needed to achieve excellence, Dean Kessler has signed a landmark affiliation agreement with the Yale New Haven Health System. In addition, he has presented a comprehensive program to solidify the medical schools budget, andbased on the schools programmatic needsdeveloped a facilities plan that will expand research and enhance teaching throughout the institution. For Dean Kessler, the strategic facilities plan is about more than bricks and mortar. Its about people and ideas, and the creation of an environment for research. Yales bold new investment in facilities will allow us to do what we must do best: sustain a brilliant and creative faculty as they transform the face of medicine with their stunning scientific advances and as they train the next generation of medical leaders. This clear vision of the purposes of the school has been a hallmark of Kesslers administration. In the right environment, there is no limit to what our faculty and students can achieve, and my mission is to make that environment as supportive, as responsive, and as productive as it can be. A major initiative of the plan is a new $176 million, 450,000 square-foot building that will furnish six floors of laboratories for disease-oriented research; core facilities for mouse genomics and magnetic resonance imaging; and teaching space for anatomy and histology. A total of $500 million will be invested over the next decade to renovate and improve other key facilities of the school. In all, laboratory space will be increased by 25 percent, teaching space will be consolidated and expanded, and new centers of research will be created. Both the new construction and the renovations reflect the value that the Yale School of Medicine places on interaction and collaboration across departments, disciplines, and modes of medicine. This is a very special school, says Kessler. It is full of intellectual vitality, the quest for knowledge, and the vigorous pursuit of excellence. |
