Yale Child Study Center

James Jamieson, M.D., Ph.D., was on his way from his laboratory to the Office of Education when he was flagged down by a few students in the M.D./Ph.D. program, which he directs. The courtyard of Edward S. Harkness Memorial Hall is a crossroads for Yale’s medical complex. On a sunny day, you’ll find researchers from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology discussing results with their physician colleagues from Yale-New Haven Hospital, faculty from the Child Study Center tossing wayward balls back to children in the Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center, and students in Epidemiology and Public Health sharing lunch with M.D./Ph.D. candidates.

Harkness itself includes Marigold’s cafeteria - converted on thursday nights into “Club Med,” with a different faculty member serving as bartender each week; the Recovery Room, a student lounge; pool tables, a music practice room; and a fitness center newly renovated through the generosity of the Class of 1958, as well as dormitory rooms for 125 medical Students.

Students who do not live in Harkness can choose from among the New Haven area’s wonderful range of neighborhoods. Wooster Square, with its flowering cherry trees, Italian bakeries, and world-famous pizzas; St. Ronan Street, lined with stately mansions; East Rock, with groceries and boutiques around the corner; and Westville, a cohesive, family-oriented community, are a few of the possibilities within the city, and surrounding towns offer abundant housing on the waterfront, in the countryside, or in the suburbs.

“New Haven is large enough to be interesting and small enough to be friendly,” says Yale President Richard Levin, who has lived in the New Haven area for more than 25 years.
