About VBT

The Yale Interdepartmental Program in Vascular Biology and Transplantation (VBT) was established in 2000 under the directorship of Jordan S. Pober, M.D., Ph.D. This research effort is closely coordinated with a new clinical effort, the Yale Interdisciplinary Program in Clinical Transplantation, directed by Marc I. Lorber, M.D. The goals of these combined efforts are to apply the insights of vascular biology to improve organ replacement therapy and to use organ replacement therapy as a clinical window to advance the science of vascular biology. The VBT program has identified three initial targets:

  1. improving outcomes of solid organ transplantation by developing new therapies for acute and chronic arterial injury of allografts;
  2. developing endothelial cell-based approaches for tissue revascularization and for engineering of synthetic vascularized tissues and organs; and
  3. elucidating the mechanisms of vascular rejection in pig-into-human xenotransplantation.

Our program-based organizational structure combines the investigative strengths of laboratory-based faculty with primary appointments in Yale's basic science departments with an outstanding interdisciplinary clinical team in organ transplantation that has both excellent clinical outcomes and significant clinical trials experience.

Mission Statement

The overall mission of the Interdepartmental Program in Vascular Biology and Transplantation is to foster new research in vascular and transplantation biology. The emphasis of our program is on translational research and discoveries coming from this program will be directed at and applied to clinical problems in transplantation and related fields. The Program will also train basic and clinician scientists in research in these disciplines.
