Library Project: "A Scavenger Hunt"

One of the glories of Yale is its Library (in reality, a large collection of individual libraries, some general and some highly specialized). The Library system is available to all members of the Yale community of scholars and is so vast and diverse that it takes a lot of experience to make use of its full resources. From the start of your freshman year, it is important that you begin to explore this great collection. Your research papers will be immeasurably easier if you know how to find materials in the Yale Library.

You are encouraged to "take the tour" provided by the library staff and see some of the main features of the Library. In addition, to provide you with more "hands-on" experience in the Library before you start your first research paper at Yale, we will have two sessions devoted to a "Library Scavenger Hunt."

The first session (10 September 08) we will meet in the Rotunda of Sterling Memorial Library and explore some of the spaces and facilities of SML and the Beinicke Rare Book Library. You will receive a short list of questions that, in order to find the answers, will take you to various resources in the Yale Library System. Over the course of the next two weeks you should spend a little time in the Library and find the answers to the questions on your list (each student will have a slightly different list). On 22 September 08, in class each of you will tell us how you found the answers to the questions on your list. The idea is for each student to illustrate some aspect of library research as discovered by her or himself.
