Science 198: Perspectives on Science
2005-2006
Each student in a discussion group must serve as a discussion group leader once per semester. This involves selecting two or three leaders per meeting. During the first class meeting of the semester, each student will be asked to list, in order of preference, three lectures that they would like to handle as discussion leader. These lists will be collected at the first lecture (2 September 2005). The course directors will use this information to select leaders. Results will be posted on the discussion section page of the class web site.
Discussion leaders are responsible for organizing and leading the discussion section associated with their assigned lecture. Responsibilities include:
1) Review the main points of the lecture.
2) Discuss the assigned lecture questions.
3) Identify and discuss broader questions.
Discussion leaders should collaborate in advance of the discussion meeting and prepare an outline of how the discussion section will be run. This outline should be emailed to the two section faculty discussants and to the co-directors (Schmuttenmaer and Summers) by the Wednesday evening before the discussion group meets.
