Introduction
The mission of the Therapeutic Radiology Department (Hunter Radiation Therapy) at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center is to:
- provide consultative, treatment and medical care services on a routine and emergency basis.
- deliver high quality health care in an efficient, effective and courteous manner.
- assist patients and families in coping with the patient's disease.
- refer or direct patients, families, or other customers to appropriate resources within or outside Yale-New Haven Hospital.
- provide access to departmental records and reports to practitioners involved in the care of referred patients.
- be responsive to the needs of those who come to us for help.
Hunter Radiation Therapy is located within the medical center complex at 15 York Street, and occupies over 39,000 square feet, 20,000 square feet for clinical use and 19,000 square feet dedicated to research. The clinical area occupies two floors. The first floor houses a clinic with six examining rooms and the dosimetry section.
In the treatment area on the basement level of the Hunter building there are three megavoltage treatment machines (Varian linear accelerators) and a treatment simulator. The department utilizes superficial and orthovoltage radiation as well as a state of the art high dose rate remote afterloading system (Gamma Med). The department has implemented an active and successful program for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for a variety of tumor sites. A state-of-the art CT-Simulator is also in use.
Hunter Radiation is a well equipped and complete radiotherapy service. All forms of external beam and intracavitary or interstitial therapy are available and are provided by an experienced staff of radiation oncology specialists, resident physicians, nurses, technologists and dosimetrists.
