Research Endeavors
The Yale Department of Psychiatry is considered one of the world's leading
centers of psychiatric research. The Department's research efforts are
characterized by its commitment to multidisciplinary approaches, ranging
from molecular neurobiology to health care outcomes, in the service of
providing improved treatments to our patients.
Its bridged research program is known internationally for the close
interaction between basic and clinical researchers which has resulted
in the rapid conversion of discoveries in the laboratory into new treatments
for our patients. In addition, we take great pride in the dedication of
our faculty to mentorship. The continued success of the Department's research
endeavors depends upon attracting the best students and training them
to become the next generation's leaders in basic and clinical research
related to mental illness.
Divisional organization of research in the Yale Department of Psychiatry
is designed to provide an integrative mechanism to facilitate research
across the boundaries of the Department's 5 clinical services and to optimize
the use of laboratory and clinical resources thereby enhancing research
capabilities. The establishment of a critical mass of researchers investigating
a common set of problems facilitates the career development of trainees
and junior faculty. It also provides a supervisory structure for the faculty
research effort and a methodology for the continual assessment of departmental
strengths and needs in key areas of research central to the Department's
research missions.
