Research Interest
My research focuses on the treatment of cocaine dependent humans. My major research area is psychopharmacology using medications to treat cocaine abuse, such as the antidepressant desipramine, the dopamine agonist amantadine, and the partial opioid agonist buprenophine. While these projects are mostly large scale, outpatient, randomized, clinical trials, smaller pilot studies using new medications are also routinely undertaken and offer the opportunity for student participation. Other studies focus on psychiatric disorders in substance abusers and on the human neurobiology of substance dependence. The neurobiology studies include SPECT neuroimaging of cerebral blood flow in cocaine abusers and treatment of their perfusion defects, which appear due to cocaine abuse.
