Clinical and Basic
Neuroscience Research
Training Program in Psychiatry
The Clinical Neuroscience Research Training Program (NRTP) is supported
in part by a National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the National
Institute of Mental Health. The overarching goal of the NRTP is to provide
psychiatry residents with specialized training in clinical neuroscience
and psychopharmacology research in order to better prepare them for a
career in academic psychiatry/neuroscience research. The NRTP typically
accepts up to two new residents with each incoming PGY1 residency class.
While many NRTP residents have a doctorate degree in addition to their
medical degree, this is certainly not a requirement for entrance into
the NRTP. Residents from the general psychiatry program may join the
NRTP during their PG 3 year if they have developed a significant interest
in research since beginning residency training. Since the NRTP is supported
in part by federal research training funds, residents in the track must
sign an NRSA contract, including a "payback agreement," as a condition
of award. The payback agreement requires a second year of research involvement
for one year stipend support. Thus, residents completing two-years in
the program finish the residency without additional service obligation.
In addition, and by virtue of their essentially full-time involvement
in clinical research in the track, PGY III and IV NRTP residents may
be eligible for federal loan repayment programs during their tenure in
the track. For more information about the NRSA payback agreement, please
refer to Appendix M in the Residency Handbook or to the PDF file: Payback
Agreement.
