News: The Program Offices Have Moved.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2007 - The offices of the Yale Physician Associate Program have just moved to a new location in Edward S. Harkness Memorial Hall, located at 367 Cedar Street, New Haven, CT 06510.

Mission

The mission of the Yale University School of Medicine Physician Associate Program is to educate individuals to become outstanding clinicians and to foster leaders who will serve their communities and advance the physician assistant profession.

Welcome

The Yale PA Program was developed in 1970 under the auspices of the Trauma Program of the Department of Surgery and accepted its first class in 1971. From 1972 to 1980, the Program received funding from the Office of Special Programs, Bureau of Health Manpower Education of the National Institutes of Health. With this initial support and that received through a Veteran's Administration Grant (1974-1979), the Program has grown to accept a class of 32 students annually. In January 1973, the Yale Program graduated its first class of 5 students. As of 2004, a total of 788 physician associate students have completed their education at Yale.

The Program operates on a twenty-seven month calendar with admission in early September of each year. Students enter the Program with a wide variety of backgrounds and previous patient care experience. A baccalaureate degree is required and a number of matriculating students possess graduate degrees. Beginning with the class of 1999, students who successfully complete program requirements are awarded a Master of Medical Science degree (MMSc).

In 1971, the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association established the "Essentials of an Approved Educational Program for the Primary Care Physician's Assistant." As of January 1, 2001 these essentials, now called "Standards", are monitored by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. The Yale Physician Associate Program has enjoyed accreditation since 1975 and has been reaccredited through September 2012.
