Welcome!
Pharmacology at Yale
Pharmacology at Yale University has a rich history of achievement and a strong
tradition of scholarship. Yale was the site of the first studies and trials of anticancer chemotherapy.
The modern era of cancer chemotherapy began when Alfred Gilman and Louis Goodman studied the effects of
nitrogen mustard on transplanted lymphosarcoma in mice and then initiated clinical trials in 1942
The department has maintained its position of pre-eminence through the end of the century with
the recruitment and development of scientists with international reputations.
Careers in Pharmacology
There are a variety of opportunities for those with degrees in pharmacology in addition to teaching and research in academic setting. Pharmaceutical companies and government research agencies have increasing requirements for scienti
sts trained in pharmacology for the conduct and management of basic research. As a result, there are extensive employment opportunities for graduates of the program. Recent graduates of this department are now pursuing research that includes not only phar
macology but also molecular biology, biochemistry, neurophysiology, oncology, cell biology and medicine.
