Perinatal Medicine has participated in the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) Neonatal Research Network and the Yale GCRC/CTSA grant for many years. There are currently 14 active clinical research protocols in the NBSCU, including 8 Network trials. Areas of active research cover a broad spectrum including: epidemiology of neonatal infections, predisposition of small for gestational age infants to TPN cholestasis, early diagnosis of candidiasis, biomarker epidemiology of disorders in extremely low birth gestational age newborns, the genetic component of common neonatal disorders with a focus on bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis and intra-ventricular hemorrhage, role of cortisol in the management of hypotension n premature infants, circulating stem cells in premature neonates - correlation with recovery from lung disease and the SUPPORT trial, a randomized clinical trialtesting whether the incidence of BPD and ROP in extremely low gestational age neonates can be reduced by ventilation and oxygen saturation strategies initiated in the delivery room.

Laboratory Research
Faculty and fellows are actively engaged in basic research with a focus on developmental biology. Many of these studies are being conducted in collaboration with research groups outside the Department of Pediatrics. Areas of investigation include: molecular genetics of red cell disorders, developmental erthyropoiesis, role of cytokines in hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury, mechanisms of diabetic embryopathy, molecular genetics of reading disability (dyslexia), and role of VEGF in hyperglycemia induced vasculopathy/embryopathy.
