The clinical activities of the Faculty and staff of the Division of Perinatal Medicine are located in the Newborn Special Care Unit (NBSCU) at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital - the first of its kind in the world. The NBSCU serves as the Regional Neonatal Center for Southern Connecticut, with referrals from neighboring states as well. Every year, about 5,000 births occur at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and more than 800 newborns are admitted to the Newborn Special Care Unit.

Infants are transported from other hospitals throughout our region for specialized services such as surgery, cardiology, inhaled nitric oxide and ECMO. The average daily census in the NBSCU is 46, making this the largest clinical unit in the Children's Hospital.
