ADMINISTRATION OF THE PROGRAM

The PSDP administrative office is located at the Yale University School of Medicine. The Program Office coordinates application and evaluation materials, arranges all meetings for the PSDP fellows and committees, and is charged with day-to-day management of the PSDP and its budgets. Fellows' salaries and expenses are administered as subcontracts through their approved training institutions.

Program policy is set by a Steering Committee of 14, whose members represent The Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs Inc. (AMSPDC) or the agencies funding training positions. A Selection Committee of 12 is comprised of four members representing AMSPDC (not necessarily chairpersons), four members of the Steering Committee and representative scientists from four areas of basic research. The Program Evaluation Committee reviews the Program as it is reflected in the training and career development of Program trainees. This committee of five is comprised of representatives named by the American Pediatric Society and the Society for Pediatric Research and an ex officio member representing the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development. Membership of Program committees rotates on a regular basis.

CONTINUING REVIEW, EVALUATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Yearly progress reports from PSDP fellows and their mentors enable the Steering Committee to monitor the fellow's continued academic development and to insure the continued commitment of the sponsoring department. Additional review of career development occurs each March at the annual meeting of the PSDP held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the AMSPDC, when:

  • The Program Evaluation Committee and the Steering Committee interviews all first-year trainees
  • The Program Evaluation Committee interviews second- and third-year trainees and works with trainees to identify areas of concern
  • PSDP fellows attend workshops on all aspects of career development, including mentorship, preparation of grant proposals, balancing personal and professional commitments, and negotiation skills
  • Second-year fellows present posters of their research. Departing third-year fellows present brief oral summaries of their research to an audience of pediatric department chairs and residents
  • Members of PSDP committees are available to advise awardees throughout the training period.
