Critical Care Medicine

Clinical

Our pediatric specialists staff the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). This nineteen-bed intensive care unit is the primary setting for patient care. Patients are admitted to the PICU from other sites within Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (Emergency Department; Operating Rooms, Clinics) and from other hospitals. There are over 1200 admissions per year to the PICU where the mortality rate is 2%—lower than the average mortality of 4 - 6% in academic medical centers.

Our faculty pediatricians are all trained in pediatrics and in critical care medicine. Accordingly, our patients receive state-of-the-art care from our doctors and facilities. All faculty have expertise in the evaluation and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents with life-threatening medical and surgical problems.

A highly-skilled critical care transport team is available 24 hours per day, every day, to bring children from other hospitals to our hospital. Our transport service enables us to reach children who might otherwise not have access to care.

We offer consultation with physicians at other hospitals to assist in the evaluation of children with complex and potentially critical illness.

Our extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) service supports children with cardiopulmonary failure.

As a hospital-based specialty, we do not take appointments. However, we are always available at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital to care for your child in his or her time of greatest need.
