The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) is a science mentorship program for high school students interested in pursuing careers in biomedical science sponsored by the Yale School of Medicine chapter of the Student National Medical Association and the Boricua Latino Health Organization.
Program Overview
HPREP is a nationwide high school science enrichment program aimed at recruiting African-American, Native American, and Latino high school students into careers in the sciences and health professions. Under the mentorship of Yale minority graduate and professional students, sophomore and junior high school HPREP participants are introduced to various topics within medicine and public health. They are taught to critically read, evaluate, and discuss scientific literature, with special emphasis on problems and issues disproportionately affecting minority communities.
Topics in health and medicine
HPREP consists of ten sessions which typically include the following topics:
- Disease Prevalence: Social Class and Race Disparities
- Writing Skills Workshop
- HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
- Drug Abuse
- Educational Opportunities and the College Application Process
- Domestic Violence
- Medicine and Law
- A History of Minorities in Science and Medicine
- Music, Sex, Violence, and Suicide
Topics sessions include a short lecture followed by lunch (provided by SNMA/BLHO), and then small group discussions to encourage and facilitate dialogue about the information covered during the lecture. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions. Assessment will be based on oral participation, a series of short essays critiquing various scientific articles, and a final paper.
Participation certificates and scholarships
Upon completion of the program, all participants receive certificates of merit. The most outstanding and most improved students receive scholarships payable to the four-year college of their choice upon their enrollment. Awards will be presented at the closing ceremony. Parents, family members, teachers, and friends are encouraged to attend.
Program dates and application procedures
HPREP starts in the beginning of January and continues for 10 weeks. Sessions are held on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Yale University, School of Medicine.
High school sophomore and junior students who wish to participate in HPREP must submit a written application and a letter of recommendation from a science teacher or guidance counselor.
