Marriages
There were a total of 889 marriage licenses issued in New Haven during 1994. The 1994 total increased slightly from the previous year's total of 882. For brides, the 25-29 year old age category once again had the most marriages, as in the six previous years. The most marriages for grooms also occurred in the 25-29 year old category in 1994. Approximately 28% of all marriages occurred between the ages of 25-29.
There were 690 first marriages for resident and non-resident brides and this total accounts for 77% of the total brides married in 1994. For resident and non-resident grooms there were 678 first marriages and this total accounts for 76% of the total grooms married in 1994.
Resident and non-resident brides 19 years and younger accounted for 4% of total brides married in 1994. Resident and non-resident grooms 19 years and younger accounted for 1% of total grooms married in 1994.
Resident Marriages
Once again the number of resident brides was greater than the number of resident grooms. There were a total of 482 resident brides and this accounted for 54% of all brides married in 1994. There were 468 resident grooms married. This total accounted for 52% of grooms married in 1994.
There were 423 marriages in which both the bride and groom were resident. This total accounted for 47% of all the marriages in 1994.
There were 371 first marriages for resident brides and this total accounted for 76% of the total resident brides married in 1994. For resident grooms, there were 356 first marriages and this total also accounted for 70% of the total resident grooms married in 1994.
Table 8 on the next page will show the number of marriages by age, race and marriage order of resident and non-resident brides and grooms.
