Infant Deaths
According to state data there were a total of 27 resident infant deaths (<1 year) recorded in 1994. The infant death rate increased significantly from 9.0 per 1,000 live births in 1993 to 13.5 per 1,000 live births in 1994. A total of 15 infant deaths occurred in the neonatal period (first 28 days of life) accounting for 55% of all infant deaths in 1994. Twelve infant deaths occurred at an age period greater than 28 days (post-neonatal). *
Of all infant deaths who had birth data available (23), 7 weighed less than 2,500 grams. Twenty-five percent of the infant deaths had extreme immaturity or other causes related to low birth weight listed as either the primary cause of death or as an underlying cause of death.
The average age of the mother of infants who died in 1994 was 25 years. One teenage mother gave birth to an infant who died in 1994.
More male infants died in 1994 than female infants. A total of 20 males died making the male infant death rate 10.0 per 1,000 live births. Female infants had an infant death rate of 3.0 per 1,000 births, a total of 7 female infants died in 1994.
In the gestational age category there were no infant deaths reported as "unknown" or "99." From this account, 7 deaths to babies born prematurely (<37 weeks) were reported.
* These statistics were derived from birth certificate and death certificate data given to the New Haven Health Dept. by the State of Connecticut. Unfortunately, the data for infant deaths did not always match up with the data for births.
