Period of Gestation

There were a total of 193 premature births recorded in 1994. This total accounted for 9.7% of all births in 1994, a slight decrease from the 1993 ratio of 10.6%. The rate of premature births has decreased from the previous two years.

In 1993, the premature birth rate was 106.0 per 1,000; the 1994 premature births per 1,000 live births was 96.9. From 1991 until 1993 the rate of premature births had consistently increased, however in 1994 the number of premature births decreased slightly.

The premature birth rate for nonwhite mothers was almost twice as high as for white mothers in 1994. The rate for white mothers was 77.8 premature births per 1,000 white births and 112.3 per 1,000 births for nonwhite mothers. Table 6 below shows the premature births by age and race of the mother for 1992-1994.
