Marriages

There were a total of 882 marriage licenses issued in New Haven during 1993. The 1993 total continued to decrease from the previous years total of 942. For brides, the 25-29 year old age category once again had the most marriages, as in the six previous years. The most marriages for grooms also occurred in the 25-29 year old category in 1993. Approximately 26% of all marriages occurred between the ages of 25-29.

There were 655 first marriages for resident and non-resident brides and this total accounts for 74% of the total brides married in 1993. For resident and non-resident grooms there were 658 first marriages and this total accounts for 74% of the total grooms married in 1993.

For resident and non-resident brides 19 years and younger accounted for 3% of total brides married in 1993. For resident and non-resident grooms 19 years and younger accounted for 2% of total grooms married in 1993.

Resident Marriages

Once again the number of resident brides was greater than the number of resident grooms. There were a total of 466 resident brides and this accounted for 52% of all brides married in 1993. There were 437 resident grooms married. This total accounted for 49% of total grooms married in 1993.

There were 391 marriages in which both the bride and groom were resident. This total accounted for 44% of all the marriages in 1993.

There were 341 first marriages for resident brides and this total accounted for 73% of the total resident brides married in 1993. For the resident grooms there were 320 first marriages and this total accounted for 73% of the total resident grooms married in 1993.

Table 8 on the next page will show the number of marriages by age, race and marriage order of resident and non-resident brides and grooms.
