Infant Deaths
According to state data there were a total of 19 resident infant deaths recorded in 1993. The infant death rate decreased significantly from 14.4 per 1,000 live births in 1992 to 9.0 per 1,000 live births in 1993. A total of 11 infant deaths occurred in the neonatal period (first 28 days of life) accoun ting for 57% of all infant deaths in 1993. Eight infant deaths occurred at an age period greater than 28 days (postneonatal).*
Of all infants who had birth data available (19), 7 weighed less than 2,500 grams. Thirty-six percent of the infant deaths had extreme immaturity, or other causes related to low birthweight listed as either the primary cause of death or as an underlying cause of death.
The average age of the mother of infants who died in 1993 was 24 years. Four teenage mothers gave birth to infants who died in 1993.
More male infants died in 1993 than female infants. A total of 13 males died making the male infant death rate 6.2 per 1,000 births. Female infants had an infant death rate of 2.4 per 1,000 live births, a total of 5 female infants died in 1993. One infant died with an undetermined sex gender.
In the gestational age category 1 infant death was reported as "unknown'' or "99". From this account, 6 deaths to babies born prematurely (37 weeks) were reported.
*These statistics were derived from birth certificate and death certificate data given to the New Haven Health Department by the State of Connecticut. Unfortunately, the data for infant deaths did not always match the data for births.
