AIDS-Related Deaths

There was a total of 69 resident deaths in which AIDS (Acquired immune Deficiency Syndrome) was the primary cause of death, however, there were a total of 88 resident deaths in which AIDS was listed as either the primary cause of death, or as one of the u nderlying causes of death. This total represents an increase from the previous year's total of 73 AIDS related deaths. The crude death rate of AIDS related deaths (primary cause) was 52.8/100,000 in 1993, an increase from the 1992 rate of 44.4/100,000. Ho wever, AIDS related deaths accounted for 5.5% of all the resident deaths in New Haven. This percentage is a significant increase from the previous year of 4.5%.

There was a total of 49 nonwhite AIDS related deaths (primary cause) which accounted for 71% of all resident AIDS related deaths. For white residents there were 20 AIDS related deaths which accounted for 29% of all AIDS related deaths, showing a signifi cant decrease from the previous year of 40%.

The percentage breakdown of the sex of resident AIDS related deaths (primary cause) are as follows: male AIDS related deaths totaled 47 and accounted for 68% of all AIDS related deaths, female AIDS related deaths totaled 22 and accounted for 32% of all AI DS related deaths, showing an increase in female AIDS related deaths over the previous year of 29%.

A total of 33 (47%) AIDS related deaths occurred to residents between the ages of 30 - 39. This age group once again has the highest rate of AIDS related deaths over any other age group. One AIDS death was reported for a child between the 5 thru 9 age gro up.
