Birth Weight

The average birthweight for the 2,102 babies born in 1993 was 3,212 grams, or slightly more than 7 pounds. The average birthweight has remained around the seven pound mark for the past three years, 1991-1993. There were a total of 212 low birthweight births recorded in 1993 accounting for 10% of all births in that year. There was a slight decrease in the low birthweight ratio from 11.1% of total births in 1992 to 10.1% in 1.993. Table 2, below lists birthweight in 500 gram increments by race of child.

Nonwhite births had a total of 133 low birthweight in 1993, accounting for 63% of all immature births in that year. Nonwhite births had a higher percentage of immature births than white births in 1993. A total of 79 white births were im mature accounting for 37% of the total of immature births.
