Summary of New Haven Birth Data: 1993

There were a total of 2,102 live births to New Haven residents in 1993. The 1993 birth rate of 16.1 per 1,000 showed a slight decrease from the 1992 birth rate of 17.0% per 1,000. The fertility rate (based on women aged 15-44 years old) showed a slight decrease from the previous year. The median weight at birth, 3,212, increased slightly in 1993. The sex ratio (males to 1,000 females) increased from 1,067 in 1992 to 1,088 per 1,000 females in 1993. The teen-age mother rate decreased slightly in 1993 to 168.9 per 1,000 births. The premature birth rate and the illegitimacy rate increased slightly, however the immature birth rate decreased slightly. All of these rates are summarized below in Table 1, and shown in more detail in the section on births to follow.
