Period of Gestation

There were a total of 223 premature births recorded in 1993. This total accounted for 10.6% of all births in 1993, a slight increase over the 1992 ratio of 10.3%. The rate of premature births has increased from the previous two year s.

In 1992, the premature birth rate was 103.1 per 1,000, the 1993 premature births per 1,000 live births was 106.0. From 1991 until 1993 the rate of premature births has consistently increased, however in 1993 the total number of prematur e births decreased slightly.

The premature birth rate for nonwhite mothers was almost twice as high as for white mothers in 1993. The rate for white mothers was 80.2 premature births per 1,000 white births and 126.7 per 1,000 births for nonwhite mothers. Table 6 be low shows the premature births by age and race of the mother for 1991-1993.
