Age of Mother

Mothers aged 25-29 had the most births in 1993, with a total of 576 and 27.4% of the total. Mothers in the 25-29 year age category had a birth rate of 77.4 per 1,000, the highest birth rate of all the age categories. The overall birth rate, for women aged 15-44 decreased from 66.8 per 1,000 in 1992 to 58.4 in 1993.

The percentage of births to teen-age mothers remained the same from the previous year of 1992. In 1992, 16.9% of the resident births were to teen-age mothers, and again in 1993 the percentage was 16.9%. The actual number of teen-age births decreased in 1993 to 355 from the total of 376 teen-age births in 1992. White females continued to have lower teen-age birth rates than nonwhite females. In 1993, there were 36.2 births per 1,000 white teen-age females, and 40.9 births per 1,000 nonwhite teen-age females.

The number of births to women who are 30 years old and older increased sharply in 1993. In 1992, 37.8 births per 1,000 women aged 30-44 occurred, compared to 41.4 per 1,000 in 1993. White women aged 30-44 had a lower birth rate than nonwhite women in the same age group. There were 38.8 births per 1,000 white females between the ages of 30-44 and 44.3 births per 1,000 nonwhite females aged 30-44 in 1993.
